Favourite Quotations

Border Art

It started during my university years when I majored in English and became exposed to all these great quotes I didn’t want to forget. Over the years, I jotted them down in journals, on various pieces of paper and in a small notebook (that has long since lost both its covers) specifically dedicated to quotes I found especially inspirational . I’d like to share some of them with you and I hope that you find them as inspiring as I do.

“A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence.”

“Where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art.”
~ Leonardo Da Vinci

“I was writing to a friend about the awful process of revision and the word fell at the very end of the line. I had to hyphenate it. The word became RE-VISION. To see again. To look again. To envision again. In that instant of revelation, the kind one has on reading a familiar poem when the succession of ordinary words suddenly becomes unfamiliar, taking on a new and revelatory meaning, I knew. I was not simply rewriting. I was being handed a second chance to dream.”
~ Jane Yolen

“The function of the artist is to disturb. His duty is to arouse the sleeper…to shake the complacent pillars of the world.”

“I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter.”

“What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies.”
~ Aristotle

“Don’t flatter yourself that friendship authorizes you to say disagreeable things to your intimates. The nearer you come into relation with a person, the more necessary does tact and courtesy become. Except in cases of necessity, which are rare, leave your friend to learn unpleasant things from his enemies: they are ready enough to tell them.”
