Blooming

She is guarded, careful,
cautious, and gnarled inward
until they meet.

She blooms
beneath his gaze
like a Christmas cactus
in November.

He blooms
in her heart
like lilacs in spring.

He uproots her,
rethinks her,
reimagines her features
as the sun sets.

She blooms
beneath his gaze
like dandelions
in May–

mischievous, playful
and gone to seed
by June.
