The English Garden in Assiniboine Park is one of my favourite places to visit. Growing up, it was an annual family outing that occurred sometime during summer holidays, but typically heralded getting ready to go back to school. The statue, Boy with the Boot, stands at the entrance.
And as you can see, this bronze statue appears to be fairly substantial. But over the years that hasn’t stopped a myriad of thieves from stealing it. The “attempt” I remember best occurred when I was in high school. A group of pranksters had spirited it away one night and the following morning, the well-known CJOB talk show host, Peter Warren, made a plea for its return. He assured his listeners there would be no repercussions – the park just wanted the Boy with the Boot back in its rightful place. Several days later, Mr. Warren reported that the statue had indeed resurfaced – the pranksters had parked it on the radio host’s front lawn.
