Sisters – Fragment #2

As she watched her mother and her aunt laugh together loudly, it suddenly occurred to her that some families value deception. The way the two women leaned into one another guarded their laughter from the rest of world; spoke of hoarded secrets as precious as gems. Martha, daughter of one, niece of the other, felt like they could spare her future disasters by imparting their blessings of truth on her. But instead they turned toward each other, shielding themselves from her, leaving her to her own faulty senses: eyes that refused to see; a voice taught not to speak in sentences
